Decoding / Re-encoding vs. Transcoding

Presented by: Joel Wilhite, Marketing Solutions Manager – Harmonic

When deciding between a decode/re-encode system versus and transcoder system, there are a series of topics to consider when reviewing the virtues of which of the two systems will provide a the right choice for scaling a particular mode of operation used in low power and translator markets. Re-encoding of course has been around for a long time and has been a staple in the cable industry for many years. But prior to re-encoding, most broadcasters will also remember when the first compression systems were installed in the early 90s to support large network distribution models while allowing a more secure environment but with a level of degradation.
